When Your Photo Filing System Fails You

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I’m excited to be posting what I hope will be the first of many blogs entries. You may notice in my bio that I’m a self-described “gadget girl” – actually, my husband calls me that, too. I’m always fascinated by the latest electronic tool that helps make life easier. I’m also a newly minted photography enthusiast and I’m not alone. After years of being told we have good photographic eyes, we’ve recently made the leap from a point-and-shoot camera to a full-blown digital SLR (dSLR).

Falling dSLR prices helped me come to terms with the intimidation factor of controlling the camera settings and I decided to take my digital memories to a whole new level. Like other “mamarazzi” out there, I am on a quest to make my new son the most photographed child in history. But all of that snapping comes at a price. No, digital is still cheaper than film. The price I’m referring to is your lost sanity when you can’t find that one adorable shot in the series of thousands of images you’ve shot and kept (after all storage is cheap, too) because your filing system has failed you.

Solution? You need software to assist with image management.

My recommendation? Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.

clip_image002

Now before you get concerned about seeing “Photoshop” in the name, just know that you don’t have to be a professional photographer to use Lightroom. It’s very user-friendly. Plus, I’m only recommending you immediately dive into one of five modules, the Library. With this module alone, you’re just a few clicks away from the brave new world of the photography enthusiast. You’ll create a true image database so you can:

  • Catalog images from multiple folders, drives or disks without changing their storage location,
  • Keyword tag images at import or after the fact,
  • Rate files to allow for quick viewing of only those magical moments,
  • Compare similar images side by side to quickly determine which to discard,
  • Feel comfortable about the camera in manual mode – Lightroom lets you teach yourself to improve your images by storing all of the camera settings that let you capture the best pictures,
  • Stop shooting in any image format other than RAW. You retain the most image information with this format and Lightroom lets you export to JPG with ease.

All these features will mean less time behind the computer screen sifting through images and more time behind the camera. If learning all of this sounds a bit overwhelming, there are many Web sites and books available for tips and tutorials, but my favorite is the video training available from Lynda.com. After you’ve mastered the Library module, you can move on to the Develop module, which lets you complete many of the same affects from Adobe Photoshop with a much flatter learning curve.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I know I am not the only one that was searching for my car on the wrong side of the building last week. Check out the little GPS car-finder that popgadget found. It can attach to your keychain.

A User on Shine had a great idea for a Recession Buster–Bring Back the Potluck. I’ve always enjoyed the surprise element of the potluck, even if my contribution is always the same.

CNN has an article about an interesting videogame development challenge that a two-woman team won this week. Tough task: Designing a game about your ‘first time.’

A new study finds that women need female role models, reporting that 27 percent of female students who named a woman as their career role-model said that they were inspired by the gender-related obstacles overcome by their choice.

eGo II Portable Hard Drive – A Stylish Solution

Monday, March 9th, 2009

My home system recently caught a nasty virus. A family member offered to help remove the virus and asked me to back up my system. Here is what I did - don’t laugh! I made a series of 4GB folders with my documents and files and burned the folders on about six DVDs. During this process, I realized I had not backed up my system (using the same process) in quite some time. Time for a change!

The eGo II Portable Hard Drive will definitely do the trick! It has 250GB of memory, which the company says can hold about 1 million photos, over 4,625 hours of music and 375 hours of video and requires no external power supply. It weighs less than nine ounces and is a tiny 3.4 x 5.4 inches.

This is the perfect solution to backing up my computer without taking up space and wasting DVDs. It comes in seven fun colors, but I just need the Spring Green! Now I need to set a reminder for backing things up regularly. How often do you back up your system?

Girl Scouts and Microsoft Tackle Online Safety for Girls

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

The new program has resources for both teenage girls and their parents. There is an all-girl editorial board that explores a differclip_image002ent Internet safety topic each month online (lmk.girlscouts.org). The girls then share what they have learned in an e-newsletter, which is distributed to adults the following month. The adult site (letmeknow.girlscouts.org) and newsletter are designed to serve as tools to help families have open and honest conversations about the dangers that girls face online.

The girls are tackling some big topics, such as Cyberbullying and Online predators and have plans for many more topics. Girls can join the conversation while parents may consider signing up for the newsletter.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Would You Go Crazy Without Your Gadgets? I was listening to the TV (while multi-tasking) when one of the women from The Bachelor used not having her Blackberry as an excuse for her behavior on the show.

The Science of Attraction

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Now this is downright fascinating…

PCWorld.com published an article this month about the science behind all those online dating sites – the ones that promise to hook you up with people with whom you’ll forever be compatible. They must be doing something right – the article says “eHarmony and similar hearts1sites drew 22.1 million unique visitors during just one month (December 2008).”

That’s everyone in the Austin area times 13 or so; i.e. a bunch.

So how does it work? Knowing an eHarmony success story personally (one of my friends is marrying her eHarmony beau in April), I’ve definitely wondered. Turns out they don’t all do it the same way.

PerfectMatch.com uses a matching algorithm, applying the concept of the Myers-Briggs indicator to relationships. True.com matches members based on their answers to about 200 questions. Toss in the data-crunching capabilities of a few hundred servers and some database software and whammo, you get a date. The article offers a lot more detail – check it out.

But what we all REALLY want to know is this – do online dating sites work? There’s no evidence one way or the other, other than the anecdotal kind (e.g. my friend, the April bride). But people are still giving them a go. Traffic to the top 10 online dating sites was up 10 percent in 2008 over 2007.

And, I loved this – the sites’ members? It’s more men (52.4 percent) than women (47.6 percent). Guys do love technology, I guess.

Computers for Tots

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I recently interviewed one of my sons on the topic of his digital camera. It was enlightening for me to get his point of view, so I decided to ask his twin brother about how he likes using the computer.

To give you a little background: My boys, who will turn 4 years old next month, have been using theircyber Sisterhood own computer for about six months now. They exclusively use the Fisher-Price Easy Link Internet Launch Pad, which keeps them on their games without the ability to explore the rest of the computer or the Web. It is really a perfect gadget since it allows us to use our existing computers.

We use an egg timer as a reminder of when 30 minutes has ended so that brother can get a turn. Learning to use the computer took about a day. They do not use the mouse feature on the Easy Link, instead use a standard optical mouse. I had to put a sticker on the left side of the mouse so they remember which button to click.

Here is a little peek at our conversation:

Me: What do you like doing on the computer?

Holden: Playing games.

Me: Is the computer hard to use?

Holden: Yes (via head nod). I asked why and got a shoulder shrug.

Me: What do you do when you get stuck and do not know how to finish a game?

Holden: I ask for help or go to the top and start over.

Someone mentioned Spiderman fruit chews and the interview was officially over. I think that the kids have plenty more they can do with the Easy Link, because some of the games are still difficult. Next on our list is Bailey’s Book House, which will be fun for learning and reading.

Have you found any great computer games or tools for tots? Please share!
