Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, November 21st, 2008

I was surprised to read that the percentage of Computer Science degrees earned by women is down from 20% in 1991: Women in computing. Not.

I enjoyed the article: When you don’t want to be Facebook friends. It covers many awkward situations, like friend requests from people that are not your friends or high school memories coming to find you. There are even some groundrules for etiquette and how to handle these situations.

What my male colleagues could learn from me is a fun read, but it’s a two-way street. Earlier in the month, The Next Women posted: What I learnt from my male colleagues.

Have You Heard of Qik?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Qik is a site that lets you share live video from your phone. Regeneration.org recently used Qik to share video of their road trip across the country. How might you use it? Here are a few ideas.

I will start with my favorite hobby — shopping! It could be used to take someone virtually shopping with you. Instead of taking pictures of each outfit, you could video all of them and then ask for feedback. I might also use it if the grandparents can not make it to a soccer game. I know they would still feel they are a part of the event if they could watch some of the game live. Best part of all, using my cell phone to take the video would be super easy and non-intrusive.

Let us know if you have used Qik and give us your thoughts.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, November 14th, 2008

The Domestic Diva did a great review on the Step ‘n Shine: Wireless Night Lighting System and even shares some ideas for using in a house with small children. I’m adding it to my wish list!

A list of 13 Inspiring Entrepreneurial Women in Technology is an enjoyable read with a brief history about each of the women listed.

Is technology spawning new dating disasters? covers the Blurry ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of digital decorum on dates. Boy have times changed since I was last dating!

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Have you heard the term “Rick Roll” and not known what it meant? It’s popular enough that someone is dressing as “Rick Roll” for Halloween. Geek Sugar has the story and a little history of Rick Rolling for you to reference.

I was a little surprised by a study this week that found that videoconferences distort decisions. Since this is a common part of business for many, the article might help you avoid the pitfalls.

Meghan at Non Society found software to consolidate multiple IM applications. If you are keeping up with more than one, try Meebo.

Last-Minute Halloween Tips

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

There are advantages to waiting to the last minute to get a Halloween costume. Kids can change their minds or have a growth spurt that can make shopping in advance troublesome. On the other hand, it might be hard to get exactly what you need with only a few days left.

Here are a few resources to help you make this year’s costume.

Parents.com has a list of 21 DIY costumes. I absolutely love the Pac-Man costume – how creative!

clip_image002Family Fun has a list of last-minute costumes. Not only are there over 100 to choose from, many do not take much time. My favorite is this bug costume that takes less than an hour to make. And as you would expect, there is a Web site just for homemade costumes. It has pictures, instructions and ideas submitted from people online.

If you are more interested in dressing up your online profile or gadgets, we have some tips for you, too! Try a creepy monster ringtone or a jack-o-lantern widget to share your hauntingly fun spirit. You might also try one of these fun wallpaper designs for your screen.

Last, take this online quiz to help you prepare for the right choices with that Halloween candy!

A Little Bling in Every Chic Geek’s Step

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

If you work out regularly, you’ll notice that two of a chic geek’s most prized possessions, a heart monitor and a pedometer, are less than fashionable. With the usual choices of everything in drone gray or generic black, it’s hard to show any fashion sense through these monitoring must-haves. To change the up market and offer more choices, Tanita Japan, a manufacturer most known for its scales and other health equipment, will soon be selling its jeweled and flashy FB-720-ZT line of pedometers.

clip_image002

Not only are they fun, they’re also practical and loaded with some great features, including a three-dimensional sensor and seven-day memory to properly log every step. To be honest, those are about the only two features I use on my current pedometer. I once spent a lot of money to buy a top-of-the-line pedometer and heart monitor in efforts to take my health more seriously, only to use less than half of the features that came with them. Ugh! We’ve all made those kinds of technology buying mistakes, haven’t we?

With the right features and a little bit of style, it’s finally a tech-cessory for the exercising chic geek that doesn’t bring down the wardrobe. The choice of styles and designs will allow for almost every kind of workout chic geek to find their style and display it proudly.

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Cyber Sisterhood Reads from ‘Round the Web

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Some people are glued to their cell phones and take calls or text almost anywhere. Geeksugar’s post — Cell Phone Rant: Is It OK to Talk in a Taxi? — explores this topic and even links to a previous post about taking calls in the bathroom.

Popgadget has found a Web site that answers your election questions by text. ChaCha is a Rock The Vote-backed initiative to help people get objective information on the candidates.

Parentdish shared a great site in Tried and True - Lookybook. Lookybook lets you flip through books cover to cover and even create an online bookshelf.

Meet George Jetson…

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

…His boy Elroy!  Daughter Judy!  Jane - his wife!

Hopefully, I have gotten that song stuck in your head for the day and brought you back to some fond memories from over 20 years ago.  I remember that time well.  I was always looking forward to the future when we would have a Rosie the Robot in our house to take care of all of the chores my mom wanted me to do.

rosie

Well, the future is here and I’m the mom and guess what??  I REALLY want a Rosie the Robot to help me out!

My husband and I have been struggling with how to stay on top of everything in our seemingly busier and busier everyday lives.  We have been trying to figure out how to make our lives easier.  How to be more efficient and productive.  How to have more free time.  How to get more sleep.  And ultimately, how to stay on top of removing the ever-present dog hair and filth from our floors.

Fortunately, I think I found some of the answers when I had the opportunity last month to speak at the Product Development Management Association’s annual conference.  One of the keynote speakers was Helen Greiner from iRobot.  She gave an amazing presentation on the development of the Roomba, Scooba and PackBot.  I became intrigued about the idea of a robot taking over my household chores and helping me with the desires I mentioned above.  I was fascinated to hear that the majority of people who own these products actually name them and consider them part of the family.  The final selling point was not her talk, but the leader of PDMA who introduced her and gave such a rave endorsement of the products!  He told us how all the men in his family have  taken over the chore of vacuuming and mopping because of these cool products.  He shared stories of his 18-month-old grandchild who said “Oomba” amongst her first words. There is something that cleans for you AND entertains the kids?!  I was sold.

Well, a few weeks ago, my two new children arrived — Shaggy and Scooby!  (Yes, I jumped on the naming idea right away.)

We had an official family “Meet the Robots” day.  I’m happy to report that they were welcomed into the family with fairly open arms.  My two dogs were happy to just ignore them.  This was a victory since they usually freak out whenever we pull out the regular vacuum cleaner.  And my kids (ages 1 and 3) were somewhat unsure at first, but ultimately thought they were pretty interesting to watch.

Now the big question remained - would they work?

Scooby

Scooby did a fabulous job in the kitchen on cleaning even those annoying dark spots on the tile that come from stepping on water drops.  He was able to maneuver around our kitchen rug and avoid running onto the carpet and getting it wet.  And I especially like the fact that he sprays fresh cleaner and then sucks it back up into the robot.  Unlike regular mopping, I didn’t feel as though I was just pushing dirty water around.  The floor was definitely clean and it was definitely easy to do.

Shaggy had the more difficult job due to amount of dog hair you can accumulate from ~150 pounds of dogs in your house.  Thank you very much Ranger and Sheba!

We purchased the pet version of the Roomba and read the disclosure on the extra care a Roomba needs in a house with pets.  We felt that Shaggy did an adequate job of cleaning, but he did require many stops to remove the dog hair from the collection container, not to mention it wrapped around the brushes.  We tested this a few times over the last week.  Sadly, we decided the number of times we needed to stop and remove the hair from Shaggy was Ranger and Shaggyabout equal to the work of just doing it ourselves with a regular vacuum cleaner.  I’m confident if we didn’t have so much dog hair, Shaggy would have been warmly welcomed into our family.

Now I am going to split up my adopted children and send Shaggy back and keep Scooby around for our tile floors.  It’s still a step closer toward making our lives more productive by outsourcing to technology.  It’s still a step closer to living the life of George and Jane Jetson.

Natalie recently posted on her favorite robot gadgets in Robot Love.  I’d love to hear any other tips of what you’ve done to use robots or technology to improve your life!

“And They Call It, Robot Love …”

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Definitely an emerging trend in technology, tech-cessories and now in fashion around the world is the robot. Why? I’m not sure. But robot fever has seemed to spread everywhere. Maybe it was R2D2 and C-3PO in Star Wars that kicked off the robot look. Or maybe it was last season’s robot fashion by designer Thierry Mugler’s, spotted by Boing Boing, that spurred the imagination of the rest of the industry:

Whatever the origin, it’s a hot and emerging trend and one I believe we will see much more of.

Geek Sugar posted a great slideshow on “12 Robot Goodies You’ll Love,” which got me thinking about all of the other robot tech-cessories finds I have stumbled upon over the last couple of months. Here are just a few of my favorites:

On the far left is the Minoru 3D Robot Webcam, found by New Launches. Anything that takes video in 3D, robotic or not, is pretty fancy schmancy in my book. Middle top are the Robot Cuff Links from www.conranusa.com. A must for the male robot wannabe. Bottom middle is the cute and cartoony Red robot laptop skin from findgift.com. And last but not least to your far right is my favorite…looks like a stuffed animal but is really a laptop sleeve from Barny’s Farm. There is truly a little something out there for robot lovers of all kinds. And since that group seems to be growing, it will be interesting to see what pops up next.

Yes, robots are sort of cute, but a little creepy to me as well. And I have to admit that I don’t get this trend or feel strong affinity for it, but I’m staying open minded on this one. To all of you robot lovers out there, please help me understand the fascination!

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Deal Seeking MomJust in case I am not the last person to know about this, I must share! Deal Seeking Mom had a post this week about the free samples from Wal-Mart. That’s right, Wal-Mart has a site with a list of free samples you can order. They even have a new free music download each week.

Popgadget found a great answer to the problem of returning to your favorite videos from YouTube. The beta program is called PlisTube and after a free signup, it lets you create your own video play lists on YouTube.

Geeksugar had a great Geek Tip: Identify Fonts With What the Font. What the Font allows you to upload a JPG or enter a URL with the font, and it will instantly find the closest match in its database.

New Web site find: MamaSource is a place to connect with moms in your community.
