Accessing and sharing music, movies, files and applications just got easier with the launch of Dell Remote Access. The application features a simple-to-use browser-based interface that connects you wherever you are to your content wherever it resides – home desktop PC, laptop, ultra-mobile device, smart phone, etc.
The application is available today in the U.S. for download at www.dellremoteaccess.com, and is scheduled to be available later this year as an optional pre-install on most Dell Inspiron, Studio and XPS desktops and laptops.
Once you activate Dell Remote Access on any Windows–based PC, you log in to my.dellremoteaccess.com from that connected device. The application provides an “at home” PC experience through key features including:
- Secure Web navigation via a simple browser-based interface — no extra software needed.
- Secure folder sharing by emailing an encrypted URL – let friends and family tap into gigs of vacation pics.
- Automatic identification of and access to all of your network devices.
- Remote desktop control that allows you to open and use applications instead of loading a copy on multiple devices – your smart phone just got smarter.
- Viewing images and streaming music from your home system library to your laptop, Mini or smart phone.
- Upload option for saving files to a home folder – no more rummaging around for your sync cables.
Power users motivated to wring every bit of potential out of Dell Remote Access can find additional suggestions at In the Clouds.
The basic version of Dell Remote Access is free and provides PC-to-PC access for one system. The premium version provides additional features like file sharing, full home network device access, remote control of home PCs, and access via smart phones and other mobile devices. The premium version is offered at $9.95 a month or $99 a year.

Yep, fine idea, Dell, except if I need my presentation and my internet connection goes POOF, then I’m glad I’ve switched to this new service but I still don’t have my data.
The phrase “Once you activate Dell Remote Access on any Windows–based PC…” should really include at this point “that has a never failing, always up and running internet connection.
I think people who need data access might consider using this, but nothing will replace having the data on a removable storage device that is not held hostage to an internet connection.
And, where are all those Dell Mini 9’s that you said were shipping? From the blogs, it looks like very few have the non-Microsoft XP versions in their hands yet.

Thread where Dell may tell us that the mini 9 orders are cancelled…

Love the idea of being able to remotely access stuff on your PC back home… but not sure I’d love the fact that I’d have to leave my PC in full power on everytime I leave the house. Have Dell thought about using the remote access wake chips made by intel? I saw some press on this I think over the summer where they have figured out how to do Wake On Lan from outside the home which apparently means I could let me pc go into sleep/suspend and when I use a remote access program or service it would wake it hope. Seems to me that in this “be green” mode of the world, that would be a good thing…use your service and be green. Just a thought.
