Let’s just say that I like to keep things neat and organized! I admit, I had surrendered this priority when it came to the four remote controls on the TV console. After all, everyone was doing it and I did not think that I had any options … until the all-in-one universal remote.
I purchased the Harmony Advanced Universal Remote as a gift for my husband. After connecting it to my computer and filling in some information from the back of my devices — ta da! I was in business!

I can use the one remote for my DVD player, TV, VCR (yes, I still own one of these) and my cable box. When I push the “watch TV” button, both my TV and cable box turn on. The four remotes are now neatly packed away out of view, and life is a little less messy!

The universal remote is the holy grail of a home entertainment system. I’ve never been able to find the one remote to rule them all after years of searching. I discovered that a touch screen like the Philips Pronto doesn’t suit me because you can’t feel the buttons in the dark. Some remotes have buttons too close together others have them in the wrong place and make it hard to use with one hand. The biggest problem I’ve had lately is my DirecTv receiver which is hooked up to my living room and bedroom TV. The best way to use it is with the unit’s RF remote which renders my expensive universal remote useless.
The best tool I’ve been able to find in my quest is a website http://www.remotecentral.com/ which posts highly detailed reviews of universal remotes, news about upcoming models, downloads for remotes that offer the option and forums for discussing problems.

@jervis961: Thanks for sharing, looks like great information here. I recently spilled something on my universal remote, so I need a replacement. This helps!
