Some online churn was caused earlier this week by the Wall Street Journal’s article on the future of Dell and Alienware’s collaboration, an article that incorrectly announced the end of the XPS line.
As Anne noted in an earlier blog, it was never really in the cards to do away with the XPS gaming products early, but instead to integrate the development teams from both Alienware and XPS to make Alienware a fantastic global brand that sets benchmarks for gaming.
I must admit I’ve been lusting after Alienware machines for years. I can’t describe how excited I was when Dell announced it had completed its acquisition of Alienware in 2006, knowing that Dell’s position in the marketplace would only mean great things for Alienware as a whole. No one was really sure how this new partnership would play out in the end: it has been an ongoing evolution since the beginning
On February 22nd, the Alienware Area-51 m15x began the Alien invasion of Dell.com. This little juggernaut was hard not to notice on our gaming laptop page, sporting the powerful GeForce 8800m GTX graphics card in a 15.4″ notebook. I was duly impressed, as this laptop was easily as powerful as a good gaming desktop. I began saving my pennies
Now, the Alien invasion has continued, with the addition of the Area-51 m9750 to the Dell gaming laptop web site lineup. This 17″ Stealth Black monster offers dual 512MB GeForce 8700m GT cards, more graphics rendering power than the system I built for myself just a few months ago. If anyone was wondering, my birthday is coming up. Please plan accordingly.
Looking at the Dell Gaming Laptop page, you can see both of these beautiful machines ride alongside of the XPS m1730 highlighting the way two great brands can team up to deliver the best gaming experience in the business. The XPS isn’t going away, though it may go in new directions as hinted by the XPS One and the slimline XPS m1330. The imminent disappearance of XPS isn’t on the itinerary, though. Things are changing for the better.
A little alien head on the back of my laptop would inspire me to relentlessly kill pixels for hours. Did I mention my birthday was coming up? (wink wink)

@Darkmym: That’s not completely true. There are developers at Alienware, they just don’t create actual components, but they do try to make software specific things for their systems, and are also involved in the driver integration for each system to make sure everything works like it should.

Will Alienware start to honor the Dell EPP, DPA and adopt the Dell Warranty options. The EPP and the Dell warranty make the M1730 a better deal than the m17x.
